The Unique of IB System
In IB system, we have Unit of Inquiry (UOI). The theme of learning is based on the current UOI. For instance, now I teach grade 3 of primary school. The first UOI is about Who We are. It is to give understanding to the students about their existance in this world. They are part of them selves, family, school, friendship and community. The central idea of this UOI is Respecting Rights and Responsibilities of Others. The students are expected to know the difference of right and responsibility. They try to find out their rights and responsibilities are and how they respect it.
The children were looking for the question that they make in the beginning of UOI. They found out the answer by research, interviewing, asking parents, teacher or siblings. Read books and they need to relate it and implement it in their life. The picture below was taken when the students were looking for information about the rights and responsibilities of people who have different professions such as security, cleaning service officers, teacher, principals, etc.
The students learn how to communicate with other people and to make them selves as a risk taker students. They need to talk in a good manner and be confident when interviewing the people.

In this unit, I teach UOI-POI which includes science and social studies, Bahasa Indonesia and Civilization Education. For Bahasa Indonesia, students are expected to create an exposition text to explain their analysis for understanding related to the rights and responsibilities. They can choose to focus in both areas or in one aspect, whether it is rights or responsibilities. Their exposition text are great. There are students who made the rights of navy, athlete and pilot because they want to be like that. Some of my students made the responsibilities of children at home. They put their work in portfolio.
For PKN or Civilization Education, we learn about how to respect others. The students present their ideas through different ways, poster, role playing and story telling. They also create cards for the special person that contains their thank as a representation that they respect others.
